Peru is one of the Latin American countries, where poverty is on the decline after being reduced from 23.9%, in 2013, to 22.7% in 2014, Peru’s Finance Minister Alonso Segura affirmed.

The Head of the Finance Ministry highlighted the progress made by Peru in the social field, despite poverty reduction "having stagnated in the region."

“In Peru, poverty reduction has been outstanding […]. Despite the fact that poverty stopped dropping in the region two years ago, and has stagnated at 28%, it continues decreasing in Peru,” the head of the Finance Ministry pointed out.

Throughout the last years, Latin America's speed of poverty reduction has been “slower” than that of Peru.

Include to Grow

In this sense, the Minister noted economic growth is “essential” to reduce poverty, but the “Incluir para Crecer” (Include to grow) policy is required, as well.

He went on to remind social progress has been made due two factors: Achieving economic growth and implementing proper redistribution policies, too.

Under the current administration, the impact government-implemented distribution channels have on poverty reduction is close to 40%, it was informed.

Achievements to emphasize

“Peru is one of the countries in the region, where poverty continues being reduced, and it is an achievement to be remarked […],” he told while addressing the press at Lima’s Government Palace.

Nonetheless, the official explained the world “faces lower economic growth rates” in the current 5-year period.

“The times for Latin America will not be the same [financially speaking], but regardless the scenario, Peru will do better,” he estimated.
