The FIFA Disciplinary Committee decided to suspend Peruvian striker Paolo Guerrero for a year after analyzing the adverse analytical result of the anti-doping test conducted on him following a match against Argentina on October 5.
According to FIFA, the player tested positive for cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine, a substance included in WADA's 2017 Prohibited List under the class "S6. Stimulants."
The world's soccer governing body said Guerrero has violated article 6 of its Anti-Doping Regulations by testing positive for a banned substance. Accordingly, he contravened article 63 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
"The suspension period starts on 3 November 2017, the date on which the player was provisionally suspended by the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee," a statement added.
In accordance with article 29 of the FIFA Anti-Doping Regulations, Guerrero may not participate in any type of match including domestic, international, friendly and official ones.
The Peruvian national soccer team captain exercised his defense before FIFA, supported by his lawyers and a biochemist, during an audience held on November 30 in Zurich.
At that time, the 33-year-old athlete confirmed cocaine consumption was
ruled out.
The recent decision leaves the Flamengo star out of the
World Cup tournament, slated to take place from mid-June through mid-July next year in Russia.
