Thousands of devotees gathered Tuesday morning in Las Nazarenas Church to join this year’s fourth procession of the Lord of Miracles, one of the most venerated images in Latin America.

As it is a tradition, Archbishop of Lima Juan Luis Cipriani celebrated a mass in honor of the Purple Christ outside the Sanctuary at 06:00 hours (11:00 GMT).

Later, the sacred “andas” or moving altar of Lord of Miracles was taken in procession through Tacna Ave., Dos de Mayo square and Alfonso Ugarte Ave.

As every year, personnel of Editora Peru - which includes Andina news agency, El Peruano official gazette and Segraf –paid homage to Peru’s most popular religious icon during the procession that passed down Alfonso Ugarte Ave.

The image of the so called Christ of Pachacamilla stopped for a moment outside the building of Editora Peru. During the homage, El Peruano’s director, Felix Paz, spoke on behalf of the workers.

While still in front of the festively decorated building, the Purple Christ was celebrated with a musical performance by Peruvian music singer, Victoria Villalobos, who sang along with Ricardo Silva, member of group Del Pueblo del Barrio.

During October, thousands of people, most of them dressed in purple, fill the streets of downtown Lima to celebrate the Lord of Miracles, the most popular religious icon in the country and one of the most venerated images in Latin America.

The icon, mostly kept in Las Nazarenas temple, is venerated by a multitude of people bound together by the common hope that the Lord will protect them and give them strength in their daily lives.

The Lord of Miracles -also known as the Christ of Pachacamilla- is Peru's most heavily attended religious festivity and is celebrated by all strata of society in homage to the image of the Crucified Christ.
