Exports via the interoceanic highway amounted to US$7.8 million in the period between 2013 and 2014, representing a 236% growth, informed Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Magali Silva.
In a visit to Puerto Maldonado (Madre de Dios region), Silva ratified the Ministry's commitment to developing projects and training programs aimed at promoting exports to Brazil through the international route that connects these two countries.
Business opportunities
Recently, the seminar called "Business opportunities with Brazil through the interoceanic highway" was organized in Puerto Maldonado with the intention of promoting exports through this route.
The minister specified the bases of an exporting and logistical program that can diversify the exportable supply and create new productive opportunities and workplaces in this region.
Those are intended to turn this region into logistic hub, making the most of its strategic location.
"The program defined a new set of short-term actions and products that aim at generating a US$8 million income, and a 30% increase of non-traditional exports and logistic services for the next three years," she indicated.
Value-added products
The Ministry aims at expanding the current industry’s processing capacity, to involve value-added and higher-priced products, like the Sacha Inchi, which is produced in the area.
The seminar was opened by Antonio Castillo, who is the advisor to the Peruvian Trade Office (OCEX) in Sao Paulo.
Some 82 entrepreneurs from Puerto Maldonado, Iñapari, Mazuco and Iberia participated in the event.
Among the attendees were the chestnut farmers, the Association of Tambopata Chestnut producers (Ascart), timber and Amazonian oil exporting companies, producers of tropical fruits and construction materials.
