Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Jose Hernandez opened on Friday the "Expo Cafe Peru 2016" in Lima, Peru.
Taking place on October 21-23 at Parque de la Exposicion (Exposition Park), the event seeks to integrate diverse national and international economic agents through knowledge, information and contact networks exchange.
It must be noted Peru is a worldwide reference in specialty coffees. Thus, it is the world’s second-largest organic grain producer and exporter.
Through the Fair Trade program, the Inca nation is the main specialty coffee supplier to the United States accounting for 25% of market niche.
Coffee has economic and social relevance in the country, since its harvesting supports 220,000 families of small producers based in 338 rural districts.
Likewise, such activity generates 54 and 5 million direct and indirect daily wages, respectively.
Thanks to Sierra y Selva Exportadora (Exporting Andes and Jungle) program, 15 special coffee varieties are present in such event. Curibamba (Junin), Tunkimayo and Tunki Coffee (Puno), Huamanpata Coffee Organic and Timbuyacu (Amazonas) are some of the varieties, which commercialization is supported by said State-run organization.
Likewise, the exhibit hosts 10 brands launched in Villa Rica district (Pasco region). These are: Activa Cafe, Mache Coffee, D’Aybar, Incafe, La Requia, Montecarlo, Posholl Cafe, Roseheim Cafe, Copaevin and Finca Avesil.
Valued-added coffees are said enterprises' specialties. It must be noted their production meets good farming practices, while promoting social inclusion.
Finally, coffee exports are projected to total US$600 million in 2016, similar to the amount recorded last year.
The event sees the participation of private and State-run organizations such as: Peru's Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (Minagri), National Coffee Board, Peru's Coffee and Cocoa Chamber, Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur), Peru's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) and the Commission for Development and Life without Drugs (Devida).
