Without any doubt, Peru is well prepared for the organization and hosting of the 20th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP20), declared Anne Becker, official of the European Commission.

As the country, which will hold the Presidency at the start of COP20, there is no doubt it is well prepared. Peruvians have started the organization very early," expressed Becker during an interview with the official newspaper El Peruano.

Becker considered Peru is “ready” to lead the different participating nations throughout the summit, at which a global agreement to face climate change, is to be negotiated.

"Peru is also showing it has plans to face climate change, and great ambitions to come to agreements," she expressed.

On this edition, COP 20 aims at creating a draft to set the commitments regarding the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The draft is intended to be finally approved and signed by Convention members during the next COP 21 to be held Paris in 2015.

In that sense, "if the topics to be part of the global agreement are achieved in Lima, it will be a great advancement,” she admitted.

"We have decided we must finish elaborating the first agreement draft by May, which is soon after the Lima meeting," she added.

Among the negotiation topics to be addressed at this summit, there is a project called "Lima's Decision".
It is about defining the contributions to be made by each one of the member-countries and how to canalize those proposals for cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Becker mentioned the European Union is confident an agreement will be reached.
