Peru’s Environment Minister Manuel Pulgar-Vidal dismissed allegations that the government’s economic stimulus package will affect environmental obligations under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed with the United States.
He explained that failure to comply with this kind of agreement could result in penalties if adopted measures lead to discrimination or breach the principle of reciprocal trade, in this case with the United States.

However, he stressed that these conditions are not given as part of the trade agreement between Peru and the United States.

"When trade agreements contain restrictions to ensure environmental requirements, sanctions are applied if there are discriminatory restrictions on international trade practices," said the minister.

The U.S. Environmental Investigation Agency reported that the environmental regulations approved by the Peruvian government violate the Andean country’s obligations under the Peru-US Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
