The itinerant showcase “El Peruano: 190 Years… A History to Tell” opened on Monday at the National Library of Peru (BNP) in Lima after having toured 10 cities across the country in the presence of Peruvian and foreign dignitaries.
Running through July 11 at the BNP hall, the exhibit includes 34 panels showcasing different moments of our history and displays the most iconic front pages and centerfolds of El Peruano official gazette.
Admission is free from Monday to Saturday and attendees can go from 9am to 8pm.
During the opening ceremony, BNP Director Ramon Mujica recalled El Peruano was an ideological and combating but also informative tool at the beginning.
“When exploring its long-lasting history, one finds out it is a kind of thermometer for measuring State concerns over tax, public debt, customs and free trade issues,” he stated.
Its pages, Mujica continued, promoted modernization of state infrastructure, and addressed debates around the abolitionist issue of slavery and tolerance towards worship. "This important exhibition of front pages and centerfolds is a recollection of facts regarding the Republican period."
Chairman of Editora Peru’s Board of Directors Hugo Aguirre Castañeda said journalism —regarded as compass of the present time— makes daily nature part of the history-taking process. That is why the display has toured the country, to bring history to all citizens.
