The Ecuadorian government decision to exclude 160 tariff headings from the 7% safeguard measure imposed on Peruvian products will allow them to continue with the preferential tariff (0%), thus benefiting 14% of Peru’s exports to Ecuador, informed the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL).

According to Carlos Garcia, manager of the CCL’s Foreign Trade Center, other 2,035 tariff headings still need to be excluded from the said measure.

The most affected items include, among others, food for animals, copper-based products, cookies and clothing.

According to a CCL analysis, most goods receiving the preferential tariff treatment are plastic products (39%), paper (15%), cleaning products (13%), bakery supplies (6%) steel products (5%), among others.

The safeguard measure was announced since early January and also applied to imports from Colombia, another country that claimed against it and called for its removal.
