More than 300 million people from 190 countries will be focusing their attention on Peru thanks to the 2013 Dakar Rally which starts in Lima on Saturday, January 5, according to Peru's export and tourism promotion board (PromPeru).

Maria del Carmen Reparaz, Director of Tourism Promotion at PromPeru, said that fans can meet and take pictures with drivers and their cars in the "Dakar Village," which opened Wednesday afternoon in Magdalena del Mar.

"Thanks to an effort at the highest level, we managed to host the start of the Dakar, which will showcase the country to more than 300 million people from over 190 countries," she said.

The PromPeru official noted that the global impact of this event will be very important for our country because visitors -including tourists, pilots and their staff- will talk about the Peruvian attractions.

In an interview with Canal N, Reparaz said that Peru is spending a million dollars on hosting the off-road race, but it's a small investment compared to the revenue that maximum exposure for the country will generate.
