Cusco region will host the Machu Picchu Kayak Fest, the first white-water kayaking festival gathering the best kayakers from around the world to compete in the challenging rivers surrounding the Inca citadel.

Set to take place on November 4-6 at the Urubamba river, the event will present three races in the following categories: down river, boater cross and slalom.

The competition will include rapids ranging from an easy Class II (for beginners) to difficult Class V (for the most experienced kayakers).

Thanks to the Andes and its water resources, Peru owes a unique geography to practice white-water kayaking and is emerging as a paradise for paddlers of recent years.

The festival highlights the importance of conserving our rivers and is intended to confirm Peru as an internationally renowned destination to practice adventure sports, the Peruvian kayaker and event’s co-organizer Niceto Yalan stated.

Registration for sportsmen is US$100 and includes two nights of accommodation, river transportation, meals, access to thermal waters and entrance tickets to the award ceremony and closing event.

Part of the money collected will be donated to the Juanito de Ugarte Memorial Scholarship, a non-profit organization helping young Peruvian paddlers gain experience by traveling abroad and enrolling in one of the best kayaking schools in the world.

The three-day long festival will be held in the town of Santa Teresa and its surrounding rivers just 1½ hour hike from the actual archaeological site of Machu Picchu.
