Over a hundred environment activists and inter-religious groups attended a candlelight vigil a day before the inauguration of Climate Change Conference in Lima, Peru.
The initiative, launched by Fast for the Climate, saw the participation of UNFCCC, Executive Secretary, Christiana Figueres and Manuel Pulgar Vidal, Minister of the Environment of Peru and President of COP20/CMP10.
The event was joined by the Inter-Religious Council of Peru, which brings together Evangelical Christians, Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Jews and Muslims, among others.
The vigil took place Sunday in Surco district’s La Floresta park, about 2 km away from the venue set for the long awaited climate change summit that starts today and will run through Dec. 12.
While in there, activists marched around the park's perimeter singing hymns and carrying their candles.
Fast for the Climate is a global movement whose supporters fast on the first day of the month in solidarity with climate victims.
It gathers youth groups, environmental groups and faith-based groups, who all want urgent action on climate change by governments this year.
Born out of the 2013 UN COP Negotiations where the leader of the Filipino delegation went on hunger strike, many groups have rallied around him to continue the movement.
