The Government of the People's Republic of China will begin construction works for a modern National Emergency Operations Center (COER) to supplement Peru's National Civil Defense Institute's (Indeci) emergency response capacity, it was reported.

The S/55 million (about US$16.8 million) center will strengthen disaster risk management in the Inca country, which was recently battered by "Coastal El Niño" phenomenon disasters.

In this respect, the new center will provide Peru's National Disaster Risk Management System with top-tier infrastructure and equipment for proper data management and decision-making.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new COER saw the presence of China's Ambassador to Peru Jia Guide, Indeci's head Luis Zuazo, among other authorities.

The center will be built on land provided by the Peruvian Army in Lima's Chorrillos district.

As is known, China has so far donated at least US$1.5 million for relief efforts in favor of natural disaster victims.
