Brazil, Colombia and Peru Air Forces conduct interdiction exercise

Air Forces from Brazil, Colombia and Peru take part in the interdiction exercise "Amazonas I" with the aim of strengthening joint strategies against traffic of illegal airplanes in Amazon air space.

According to Peru's Defense Ministry, the exercise began on June 19 with the deployment of radars and surveillance aircrafts within the area.

It involves tactics for detection, identification, interdiction and transfer of aircrafts allegedly engaged in illegal activity.

The exercise takes place simultaneously in three border cities: Iquitos (Peru), Tabatinga (Brazil) and Leticia (Colombia).

Peru is participating with Dragonfly A37B, KT-1P, Fairchild C-26B, Turbo Commander TC-690B, Twin Otter DHC 6-400, Spartan C-27J and Twin Bell B-212 crafts, as well as their respective crews and members.

The multinational operation is being supervised by Peru's Defense Minister Jorge Nieto Montesinos and Air Force Commander General Javier Ramirez Guillen.
Brazilian and Colombian Ambassadors to Peru Marcos Raposo Lopes and Maria Elvira Pombo Holguin, respectively, are also present.

Armed institutions are scheduled to conduct civic and development activities for the most underprivileged populations.
