The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) reported that Peru’s biggest travel market competitors in Latin America are Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico.

Mincetur’s head, Magali Silva, also argues that tourist attractions in Peru exhibit similar characteristics as those in other 14 countries worldwide looking to own part of the global tourism marketplace.

These markets include China, Mexico, Egypt, India, Argentina, Brazil, Jordan, Chile, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Colombia, Guatemala, Ecuador and Nepal.

Among them, Peru was found to attract the tenth highest number of foreign visitors.

"In Latin America," she noted, "Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Chile are still Peru’s closest competitors."

The government official went on to add that Egypt’s tourism industry has seen a decline due to political and social problems facing since 2010, while countries such as Mexico, Brazil and Chile continue to experience sustained growth rates.

In fact, she highlighted the decline in China’s inbound tourism, taking into account this country tops the list of Peru's travel market competitors.

She also informed that Brazil and Mexico remain as the most frequently visited destinations for long-distance tourists, who are highly important for Peru as well.
