Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism Magali Silva believes the 2016 APEC Tourism Ministerial Meeting is vital for Peru as it takes place here within a context of robust growth in inbound tourism.
“This meeting is relevant for our country, because it is held within a context of robust growth in inbound tourism, after drawing 3.5 million tourists in 2015,” she said.
Over the past years, policies and strategies implemented by Peru have turned tourism into an inclusive activity that generates jobs and contributes to financial well-being of many families.
The number of tourists from APEC member economies in 2015 accounted for 53.5% of total arrivals, that is, over 1.8 million visits.
Annual visits from this part of the country have increased by 9.4% on average, which reveals APEC’s huge importance for the country.
Silva made these remarks during the opening ceremony at the Lima Convention Center in the presence of delegations from 21 APEC member economies.
The meeting’s focus will be on measures for improving connectivity and the ease of travel to stay on track.
Innovative solutions will be suggested to consolidate tourism as driver of economic development and inclusive growth in APEC economies.
The gathering is one of several held throughout the year prior to APEC Leaders' Meeting that Peru will host in November.
