Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)'s Fourth Food Security Ministerial Meeting (FSMM) came to an end on Tuesday with the adoption of the "Piura Declaration," Peru's Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry informed.

The meeting gathered Ministers and private sector leaders from APEC's 21 member economies to establish priorities on a number of food security development subjects.

Event was hosted in Peru's northern Piura region due to its major agriculture, fishing and aquaculture potential.

"The Piura Declaration establishes agendas regarding markets, urban-rural development, climate change, innovation, infrastructure, investments, among other topics, for APEC economies to enhance productivity and develop their food system," Peru's Agriculture Minister Jose Hernandez pointed out.

The government official highlighted the relevance of issues addressed during the work sessions, in which Peru played an active role.

Piura Declaration on Food Security

The "Piura Declaration" includes two strategic appendices referred to Urban-Rural Development for Strengthening Quality Growth and the Multi-annual Program on Food Security and Climate Change.

Peru's Agriculture Ministry has pushed the cooperation project APEC Water and Food Security Challenges in a Climate Change Context, within the framework of the Policy Partnership on Food Security group.

"Water is a priority in Peru's agenda, so we are boosting its development through cooperation with APEC," Hernandez noted.

The project aims to gather water management authorities from Forum economies in order to strengthen awareness of its relevance for food security.

This way, the Inca nation seeks to begin collaborative works towards reducing water governance and integral water management practices gaps among APEC members.

Thus, FSMM marked the end of APEC 2016 Food Security Week, opened on September 16. The Week featured a number of activities gathering Forum member economies to prioritize this major issue. Such events served to outline proposals and work programs aimed at reaching a sustainable food system for the Asia-Pacific region by 2020.
