American team wins Birding Rally Challenge in Peru

The second edition of Peru's Birding Rally Challenge (BRC) concluded on Tuesday with American team Tigrisomas successfully retaining their title after eight days of back to back birding.

The 2013 version of the BRC saw six teams from the United Kingdom, United States, South Africa, Brazil and Spain go head-to-head in a competition to find as many bird species as possible in the northern Amazonian tourist circuit of Peru.

The LSU-Louisiana Tigrisomas Team from USA took top honors, having identified a staggering 636 bird species along the route crossing the regions of Lambayeque, Cajamarca, San Martin and Amazonas.

British team Forest Falcons repeated their second-place finish of a year earlier with 601 birds observed. It was followed by Zululanders of South Africa with 570, Ararajubas of Brazil with 508, E Birders of USA with 495, and Tramuntana of Spain with 482.

The first version of this international bird watching competition was developed in through the route Madre de Dios-South Interoceanic Highway-Machu Picchu from November 28 to December 7, 2012.

The Birding Rally Challenge is co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), the Export and Tourism Promotion Board of Peru (Promperu) and the Inka Terra Association.
