Andean Parliament to assess migration problems

The Andean Parliament meets Monday in Lima to discuss and agree on joint measures to solve the problems faced by migrants abroad, reported the regional body. The meeting, which includes the participation of 20 parliamentarians from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile, will also assess regulation in the fuctioning of the Parliament of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur). 

Peruvian Senior officials are expected to participate in the meeting.

The President of the Andean Parliament, Hector Heli; the Secretary General of the Andean Community, Adalid Contreras, and the head of Peruvian Communities Abroad, Manuel Talavera will also attend the meeting. 

Andean Parliament vice president, Peru's Hildebrando Tapia, said the countries of the Andean Community have some 10 million migrants around the world facing the same problems because of their immigration status.

He stated many migrants are seriously considering the option of returning to their countries because of the global economic crisis, but they do not have the support tehy need. 

"The idea is to work together to tackle these issues," he noted.
