As result of a series of meetings and dialogue roundtables organized by the government, the Candarave province population (Peru’s Southern Tacna region) will finally benefit from the infrastructure and irrigation works designed to be executed through a public-private partnership worth S/.290 million (about US$92 million).

Southern Peru will allocate S/.255 million (about US$81 million) to carry out these works, while the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation will contribute with S/.55 million (about US$17.57 million) through Mi Riego fund, the Commissioner of the National Office for Dialogue and Sustainability (ONDS) Jacqueline Mellado affirmed.

It must be noted the said office is attached to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

The Candavere people's basic demand is the need for water, she told Andina news agency.

"That is why this fund will be mainly addressed to infrastructure and irrigation works. Additionally, the government has committed to 'bringing' the Development and Social Inclusion Ministry programs," Mellado said.

Among the commitments are elaborating a hydrological study on the Locumba river basin being executed by the two consortia. The National Water Authority (ANA) will guarantee its final outcome.

"These studies will allow us to know how much water flows throughout the basin [...], the water quality and where this resource is mostly used at; whether it is addressed to the population or to mining purposes," she expressed.

To date, investment irrigation, canals and reservoirs project execution amount S/.45 million (about US$14.285 million).

"S/.10 million [about US$3.19 million] has been set aside to carry out hydrological studies on the Locumba river basin. Now, S/.50 million [about US$15.97 million] have been distributed among the area Mayors, so they can develop projects at each jurisdiction," she added.

Enterprise Southern has set aside a fund of S/.100 million (about US$31.741 million) to conduct irrigation works in Jorge Basadre province.
