14:48 García-Bachelet meeting to help normalize bilateral relations

Lima, May. 20 (ANDINA). The informal meeting between Peru’s president Alan García and his Chilean counterpart, Michelle Bachelet at the recent V EU-LAC Summit will help to normalize bilateral relations between both countries, said the head of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chilean Senate, Jaime Gazmuri Mujica.

“The goodwill gestures between García and Bachelet, as well as between the chancellors, at the last meeting mean that we should fully normalize bilateral relations”, he stated to Andina news agency.

The informal meeting balance between Bachelet and García, when they participated at the V EU-LAC Summit had a positive result because both leaders were eager to strengthen bilateral relations.

Gazmuri pointed out that this meeting was the first one since January, when Peru formally filed a demand before the International Court of Justice in the Hague, the Netherlands, regarding its maritime dispute with Chile.

“I have a positive opinion on what happened in Lima, mainly after the Peruvian government's claim about its maritime dispute with Chile”, Gazmuri added.
