Lima, Mar. 14 (ANDINA).- President Alan García emphasized the maintenance of the archaeological complex of Mateo Salado (Huaca Mateo Salado) carried out by Peru’s Presidency and the National Institute of Culture (INC) in the Limean district of Pueblo Libre.
Alan García said there are still 273 historic sites that must be restored and preserved and described the Huaca Mateo Salado as one of the greatest archaeological vestiges of Lima.
"Soon, the Huaca Mateo Salado will be ready to receive hundreds of tourists interested in knowing more about the cultures developed in Lima. It is planned to build a small onsite museum of Pre- Inca civilizations of Peru's south coast", García underlined.
García explained that this archaeological complex was built around1000 AD and it bears the name of French Matew Salé who lived there from 1550 to 1560 before he was burned by the Inquisition for witchcraft.
He also regretted that many archaeological sites are severely deteriorated by the passage of time and the city’s progress.
The archaeological complex of Mateo Salado is composed by five monumental pyramids, built over a base of tapiales (big blocks of mud assembled together). Its present extension is of about 20 hectares.
