Urubamba Valley in Cusco, southeastern Peru.
  • Lima, Oct. 15 (ANDINA).- Peruvian Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Martin Perez opens on Thursday the 35th Tourism Working Group Meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum to be held in Urubamba, located in the Sacred Valley of Peru's Cusco region.

Around 85 representatives from the 21 APEC economies, including 50 APEC tourism senior officials and six representatives from the APEC Secretariat (Singapore), will attend the meeting.

For APEC member countries, sustainable tourism is a key economic driver for the Asia-Pacific region, creating jobs and promoting investment and development.

Minister Perez said that there are currently several ongoing tourism-related projects and one of the most important in Peru is the community-based tourism program.

"In the APEC forum, which accounts for 50 percent of the world's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), community-based tourism has achieved great progress and the working group is focusing on this issue. We will be sharing our experience," he said.
