Chiclayo, May 10 (ANDINA).- Nearly 380 families hope to adopt a child in Peru with 50% of them being foreign couples, the executive director of Peru's National Institute for Family Well-Being (Inabif), Carmen Vasquez de Velasco, said Saturday.
Vasquez de Velasco said there are foreign families who wish to adopt special children or victims of incest or rape.
“They are much more sensitive, especially Europeans and Italians in particular; however, Peruvian families have first priority in adoption requests," she said.
The Inabif's head commented that Peruvian parents who wish to adopt a child are selective because they prefer children under two years old and without siblings.
She said there are very rigorous requirements and criteria to adopt a child in Peru that a couple must satisfy in order to qualify in a four-month period.
Applicants are required to be at least 25 years old, have a monthly income of 1,800 soles, own a house and pass a psychological test.
