11:08 Peruvians hold minute's silence for national hero Miguel Grau

Lima, Oct. 08 (ANDINA). Peruvians held a minute of silence at 9:50 am in memory of national hero Miguel Grau Seminario, who died on October 8, 1879 during the Naval Battle of Angamos against Chile.

President Ollanta Humala Tasso, ministers and civil and military authorities took part in today's ceremony held at the Miguel Grau square in Callao.

The minute of silence is kept exactly at 09:50 hours, because at that time 132 years ago, a shell from the Chilean ship Cochrane hit Peru's Huascar, piercing the bridge cabin and killing Admiral Grau.

His final resting place lies at the Escuela Militar Naval del Peru in Callao in an underground mausoleum. He posthumously received the rank of Gran Almirante del Perú (Grand Admiral of Peru) in 1967 by order of the Peruvian Congress.

In 2000, Miguel Grau was recognized as the "Peruvian of the Millennium" by popular vote.
