Washington Post stressed in its official site, "thirty-six kidnapped construction workers walked out of Peru’s jungle to freedom after being released by Shining Path rebels."
Hundreds of troops surrounded the rebels, forcing them into a hasty retreat, during which they left their captives behind, BBC News reported.
After Peruvian authorities captured a longtime leader of the group in February, the group was "no longer a threat to the country," President Ollanta Humala was quoted as saying by CNN.
