Puno, May 25 (ANDINA).- Last week, a total of twelve pre-Hispanic archaeological sites were discovered along Stretch 4 of the Southern Inter-Oceanic Highway in the jungle area between the Peruvian regions of Puno and Madre de Dios.
These archaeological findings, including petroglyphs, cave paintings, Inca agricultural terraces and ancient tombs, are located between Azangaro province and Inambari bridge in the Puno-Madre de Dios border.
Archaeologist Nancy Roman Bustinza explained the most important archaeological locations are Boca Chaquimayo petroglyphs in the San Gaban district, and the llacta (Quechua word for town) of Chichaccori in Ollachea, both in the province of Carabaya.
She detailed that the Boca Chaquimayo site is also known as the Sanctuary of the Lizard because of its many saurian-shaped petroglyphs.
Roman Bustinza recalled that a few months ago, they found some ceramics and human remains inside a tomb near the town of Ollachea in Puno. It is believed that the tomb might belong to the Coya Culture.
Inter-Oceanic Highway project manager Flavio Leite Mesquita said concessionaire Intersur is trying to turn these sites into tourist attractions by ensuring its protection and promoting its historical value.
