Lima, Jun. 15 (ANDINA).- The United Nations special rapporteur on human rights and fundamental rights of indigenous peoples, James J. Lenoir Anaya, will arrive Tuesday in the Peruvian capital Lima, Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde said Monday.
Minister Garcia Belaunde explained that the UN official will visit Peru at the Government’s invitation, after a series of violent clashes in the Amazonian town of Bagua.
"The Government of Peru has invited the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights and fundamental rights of Indigenous Peoples, Professor James J. Lenoir Anaya, who will arrive in Lima tomorrow, Tuesday 16," he told Andina.
In March 2008, the Human Rights Council appointed Professor Anaya as special rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people for an initial period of three years.
Anaya is a professor of Human Rights Law and Policy at the University of Arizona, USA.
The illustrious visitor last week expressed his deep concern over the clashes that left 33 dead (24 policemen and 9 civilians) in the town of Bagua.
