Lima, Mar. 12 (ANDINA).- The Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Peru, James Nealon, said United States is pleased with achievements of Peruvian government on eradication of drug trafficking and poverty in Peru.
“The U.S. government is pleased with results in matters of fight against drugs and other actions carried out by Peru’s government”, he said. Nealon indicated that, for this year, the US economic aid to Peru amounts to 150 million dollars destined to combat these scourges as well as to be invested in other fields.
He said that U.S. is supporting Peru in the execution of successful projects for the cultivation of legal products.
In this regard, he highlighted the alternative development plan implemented in Peru, in San Martín region, where products such as coffee and cacao are cultivated now, and which are sent to international markets.
On the other hand, he said that in general terms U.S. is against coca leaf trade, and on the contrary, it supports efforts to promote alternative development programs.
Regarding the bill approved by the Peruvian Congress' Defense Commission authorizing farmers to produce flour and flavorings from coca leaf, he said this is a topic that needs to be elucidated by Peru's authorities.
