Lima, Aug. 15 (ANDINA).- Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Garcia Belaunde said Friday that Peru and Brazil held "similar political views" on issues like the Honduran coup and Colombian-U.S. military cooperation.
"We have been able to prove that our political views toward certain issues are similar, mainly on those related to the regional and the integration process," Belaunde said as quoted by Xinhua.
In a joint press conference with Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim, Belaunde said that Peru and Brazil would support the proposal made by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias to find a solution to the Honduran crisis.
Peru and Brazil also shared a common view on Colombian-U.S. military cooperation. According to Belaunde, Peru and Brazil would try to find measures to ease the suspicion and fear of Colombia's neighbor countries caused by the new Colombian-U.S. agreement.
Under the agreement, Washington could gain access to at least seven Colombian military bases by the year 2019, and in return, Washington would offer Bogota some 5 billion U.S. dollars in aid.
Though the United States and Colombia have said the plan was designed to strengthen Colombia's anti-drug and anti-rebel efforts, many South American countries have voiced their concerns over more U.S. military presence in the region.
The Colombia-U.S. talks completed on Friday, and the text of an agreement has been reviewed by government agencies before getting a final approval, the Colombian Foreign Ministry said.
