Otarola said that the 50-year-old terrorist was found badly wounded and is receiving medical treatment.

The minister noted that Artemio's capture resulted from the joint effort of the National Police and the Peruvian Army.

Otarola went on to say that the leader of a remnant of the 'Shining Path' terrorist group "has practically lost his right arm" due to gunshot wounds after a clash with security forces.

President Ollanta Humala was on his way to the remote Upper Huallaga Valley where Artemio was reported wounded early Thursday.
