Peru to gain US$120mn return on COP 20's public investment

Peruvian economy is set to receive an estimated return of over US$ 120 million from the organization of the 20th Conference of the Parties (COP 20), following a government spending of US$ 90 million, Peru’s Environment Ministry reported Tuesday.

Peru successfully bid to host this year’s edition of the United Nations climate change conference and it is slated to be held in the nation's capital Lima from 1st through 12th December, 2014, thus bring together more than 12,000 visitors worldwide.

Speaking at a conference to review the progress achieved towards the organization of the international event, the Environment Minister noted that Peru is expected to record a direct economic benefit of a returning US$ 120 million.

In this regard, the senior Humala administration official expressed his optimism to surpass the above-mentioned amount with the investment commitments in such core sectors as tourism, services, biotechnology and infrastructure, among others.

The minister went on to underline that during the 2010’s edition of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conferences of the Parties (COP) held in Cancun 

"We hope to be able to attract these financial commitments," the minister said during the presentation of the progress of Peru in the organization of COP20. 

At this meeting, Environment Minister was accompanied by the president of the Council of Ministers, Ana Jara and Foreign Minister Gonzalo Gutierrez.
