The development of Peruvian gastronomy results in greater social inclusion by improving the quality of life of both small producers and suppliers, mostly at food distribution centers, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Specialist Elizabeth Minaya said.

“Behind the gastronomic boom, there are small producers owning prodigious lands but lacking in planting and harvesting technical support, as well as food distribution centers, which tend to be informal. The development of gastronomy will enhance the whole chain,” she told Andina news agency.

Gastronomy has a strong inclusive potential, as it is an important channel for producers and suppliers to sell their products both in national and international markets.

“Thanks to gastronomy, Peruvian families’ efforts in production and distribution may result in relative profitability and improved quality of their lives,” she said.

Amid this scenario, the State’s challenge is to enhance the sector through clear promotion and infrastructure upgrade policies, which allow products to spread further and in a better state of preservation.

“The State should be present through municipal and regional governments to raise productivity of plots and improve access to food distribution centers,” she pointed out.
