Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea on Wednesday affirmed that Peru will have completed the process of joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) by the end of 2026.

The government official said it was the outcome of his visit to Paris, France, where the OECD headquarters are located. There, the Cabinet member held a meeting with its Secretary-General, Mathias Cormann.

"I can calculate, with all the effort from the Foreign Affairs Ministry and all the sectors involved, that by the end of 2026, Peru will have completed the accession process to the OECD, with only the final examination remaining, which is a political evaluation conducted by member countries of this organization," he told Andina news agency.

Minister Gonzalez-Olaechea specified that the OECD's importance lies in the values that support its organization, among which are respect for democracy, human rights, individual liberties, anti-corruption practices, and transparency in public management.

"The importance of adhering is not only so that more investments can come (to Peru), but it means adhering to these values; for example, a dictatorship would not be accepted," he indicated.

The high-ranking official recalled that Peru had submitted the application to join this organization a year ago, and that he held an important meeting with the OECD secretary-general prior to his trip to China.

"He (Mathias Cormann) estimates that we are halfway there, with important progress compared to the seven or eight countries that have requested accession; we are ahead, he said that Peru ranks first," Gonzalez-Olaechea concluded.
