The southern city of Arequipa hosted the 49th edition of plenary meetings and working groups of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum's Human Resources Development Working Group (HRDWG).

The gatherings saw a broad participation of delegations from APEC member economies.

Peru's Labor and Employment Promotion Minister Daniel Maurate led the event, highlighting the importance of promoting inclusive policies that enable people with disabilities to access the labor market equitably, relying on equal opportunities.

The Cabinet member especially thanked the working group's leader, Zhao Li, with whom he worked as a team to develop activities linked to the inclusion of people with disabilities.

"Since the moment he visited us at the Labor Ministry (headquarters), we have been able to generate very good empathy to develop all these activities," he indicated.

Likewise, Maurate highlighted the participation as moderators of Sibel de Souza and Cristina Torres, two citizens with disabilities.

"I thank you very much for making all these people happy who make a double effort to join the formal labor market," he expressed.

My Career Labor Observatory

In his speech, the minister addressed the high labor informality rate that affects Peru and other APEC economies.

Similarly, Maurate detailed programs such as "Productive Youth" that seeks to train and facilitate access to formal employment for young people in vulnerable situation.

Likewise, he mentioned the "My Career Labor Observatory," aimed at reducing occupational inadequacy, and the Employment Centers, inspired by the South Korean model, to articulate labor supply and demand.

"Job Centers nationwide provide guidance on employability and information on job training opportunities. Today, Peru is focused on adapting the country's future professionals to the job market and strengthening their skills," he indicated.

Training Fund

The Cabinet member emphasized the importance of working on the development of labor force competencies and capabilities, in line with the APEC Vision 2040.

In this sense, Maurate announced the creation of a fund to boost relevant, flexible, and (high) quality training by private entities.

"With great pleasure, we are going to learn from APEC-allied economies, and we are also going to teach from our successful experiences. Only by strengthening human capital will we move forward," he concluded.
