Foreign workers in Peru up by 14.1% in July this year

The number of foreign workers entering Peru with temporary work visas ballooned to 4,678 in July this year, up 14.1 percent over the same period in 2013, according to new data from the National Institute for Statistics and Information (INEI).

The state-run agency has unveiled the most of the foreign workers who arrived in Peru during the reported period were from neighboring nations such as Colombia which topped the list with 17.5 percent of the total.

“Foreign-Spaniard born workers rank second with 13.6 percent, while citizens from Chile and Argentina accounted for 12.8 percent and 9.4 percent, respectively,” INEI said in its report which was put out Monday.

Meanwhile, people with employment-migratory status from Brazil accounted for 6.8 percent of July's arrivals while United States citizens represented 6.3 percent of workers.  

Influx of foreign labor from Ecuador and Bolivia to Peru totaled 5 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively, while foreign workers from Venezuela and Mexico contributed 3.9 percent and 2.5 percent, respectively.

Likewise, INEI pointed out that 372,791 inflows of foreigners entering Peru were recorded in July from various checkpoints nationwide, up 1.2 percent over last year's period. 

Most people either leaving or entering the country went through the migrations control at Jorge Chavez International airport in Lima (47.6 percent) or the Santa Rosa border control station in Tacna (40.7 percent)
