Alonso Segura sworn in as new Peru finance minister

Peru’s President Ollanta Humala named Alonso Segura as new minister of finance and economy, after replacing the outgoing administration's Luis Miguel Castilla on Sunday evening.

The Peruvian leader administered the oath of office to Segura during a brief ceremony at the Golden Hall of the Government Palace held in the presence of the ministerial cabinet led by Premier Ana Jara.

Segura, an economist at Lima's Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), is the second finance minister since President Humala took office in 2011.

The incoming government official was chief economic adviser to Peru's Ministry of Finance and Economy (MEF) before taking on the Economy portfolio.

He obtained a master's degree and PhD in Economics from Pennsylvania State University in the United States.

In addition, he was chairman of the Special Committee on Public Investment Projects Agency for Promotion of Private Investment (ProInversión).

Mr. Segura has also served as director of Peruvian development bank Cofide and led the Specialized Team to Follow-up on Investments (EEI), specially designed to track investment execution in the MEF.

Previously, he worked at Banco de Credito del Peru (BCP) as manager of Investment Strategy and Economic Studies, and served as advisor of the Executive Director for the “Silla del Cono Sur” of The International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Furthermore, the newly-appointed minister was designed Chartered Financial Analyst by CFA Institute and Financial Risk Manager (FRM) by Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP).
