The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Monday affirmed that the Chavin de Huantar Operation demonstrated the commitment to peace and defense of democracy, as well as the determination of a population united in the fight against terrorism.

"To those who tried to introduce terror by undermining governance, I say: terrorism never again. From here I call on all Peruvians to be united," she said at the ceremony marking the anniversary of the military operation.

The Head of State underscored that, 27 years later, the brave action of Army and Navy members, who defended peace, freedom, and democracy through the successful Chavin de Huantar Operation, is still present.

Moreover, she said that love for the country and the successful operation allowed the release of 72 hostages from the hands of the terrorist group Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA), which had kidnapped them at the residence of the Japanese ambassador.

"In such a dark time, our brave Chavin de Huantar commandos, together with the sacrificed miners who built the tunnel, demonstrated their commitment to peace and defense of democracy, risking their own lives," Mrs. Boluarte remarked.

"Their heroic gesture also demonstrated the strength and determination of a population united in the fight against terrorism," she added.

In her speech, the dignitary asserted that the bravery and dedication of those commandos deserve "admiration and eternal respect," which is why their lesson of unity, solidarity and love for the country will not be forgotten, as well as commandos Juan Valer and Raul Jimenez, and Supreme Court Judge Carlos Giusti, who died during the operation.

On the other hand, the country's top official noted that the replica of the Japanese Ambassador's residence has become the Chavin de Huantar Contemporary Museum dedicated to preserving the memory of those momentous events, honoring the bravery of the heroes, and shows that, if united, in the same purpose, we are unstoppable and we can overcome everything.
