Peru: Mining investment up 17% in 1Q 2024

09:14 | Lima, May. 7.

Energy and Mines Minister Romulo Mucho indicated that mining investment was around US$1 billion during the first quarter of 2024, a 17% growth compared to the same period last year.

During his presentation at the Second Extraordinary General Assembly of Regional Governors, he stated that the amount recorded over the first three months leads to projecting that mining investment will exceed US$5 billion this year.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines' (Minem) head said mining investment totaled US$848 million in the first quarter of 2023.

Likewise, the government official stressed that Peru is generating greater confidence among investors, which will allow more projects to be launched in the mining-energy sector.

At the gathering, strategies were addressed to foster joint development in the mining sector in order to work collaboratively with regional authorities and achieve the economic growth necessary for the population's benefit.

The Minem's head underscored that mining production figures increased in the first quarter of 2024.

He added that a record of 3 million tons of copper is forecast to be reached at the end of this year.

"Mining has significantly changed Peru's economic, social, and cultural path. Copper and other minerals produced in Peru are essential for fighting climate change," Mucho underlined.

He added that the government's permits and authorizations agenda means a step in the right direction. Yet much more is required, such as the single window project in a digital government.

Lastly, Minister Mucho showed his willingness to continue dialogue with each representative to develop the country's important mining and energy projects, which generate employment for Peruvians.

The assembly was chaired by National Assembly of Regional Governments (ANGR) Chairman, Cusco Region Governor, Werner Salcedo. It was attended by governors of Lima, Ancash, Arequipa, Tumbes, Ucayali, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Loreto, Huanuco, Ayacucho, Pasco, Moquegua, Huancavelica, Callao, and Amazonas.

This event was held at the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP) in the capital, Lima, on Monday.
