In order to conduct scientific research on the upper atmosphere and its phenomena, the Peruvian Space Agency (CONIDA) and NASA have been coordinating the launch of sounding rockets for scientific research purposes from Punta de Lobos Scientific Base in Lima's southern Pucusana district.

This was stated by Conida institutional head, Roberto Melgar, in a presentation addressed to Defense Minister Walter Astudillo.

The Executive Branch representative visited the National Satellite Image Operations Center in Pucusana on Friday morning to supervise the entity's work.

Melgar explained that a NASA delegation arrived in Peru last January to refine the details of the sounding rockets launch operation scheduled for 2028.

This will be executed taking advantage of Pucusana scientific base's strategic location. This will allow the launch of between 10 and 14 sounding rockets designed to study the interaction between the sun and the Earth's magnetic field.

The Defense minister also received a report on the launch in 2025 of the Paulet sounding rocket, manufactured with 100% Peruvian technology, which will rise to a height of 40 km, exceeding the 10 km reached in a similar operation in 2021.

Likewise, Astudillo was informed about the operation of the propellant (fuel) plant used to push said rockets.

Space port

On the other hand, Conida, the Peruvian Air Force, and the United States Space Command participate in the project for the construction of a space port in the South American country –a public investment initiative promoted by the Defense sector.

Besides, it was reported that since the launch of the PERUSAT-1 satellite –in September 2016– the Peruvian Satellite System delivered to user institutions more than 117,478 metric and submetric optical images aimed at contributing to socioeconomic development and national security.

"If we value an average market price, the contribution of the Peruvian Satellite System has been worth almost S/2 billion (about US$544 million)," Melgar indicated.

In turn, the Defense Ministry's head highlighted the work carried out by Conida in (properly) positioning Peru in scientific research and space technology.

Also present during the visit were Air Force General Commander Carlos Chavez Cateriano and Deputy Defense Resources Minister Adolfo Herrera Orlandini, among other commanders of this military institution.
