Peru's cocoa exports soar 9% in 1Q
Lima, May 27 (ANDINA). Peruvian cocoa exports jumped nine percent during the first quarter of the year totaling US$7 million, Peru's Foreign Trade Society (ComexPeru) said Sunday.
In recent years, cocoa shipments have been showing an upward trend, as between 2008 and 2011 they registered an average annual growth rate of 52 percent, reaching a value of US$63 million in 2011.
Though cocoa production decreased 1.4 percent in the first quarter of 2012, totaling 10.1 million tons, production has doubled between 2004 and 2012.
Main destinations of Peruvian cocoa exports are Netherlands with shipments worth US$ 1.7 million (-22 percent), Italy with US$ 1.5 million (164 percent) and Belgium with a million (-25 percent).
