Minister Carlos Paredes noted that the new, privately-funded airport in Chinchero will replace the Velasco Astete terminal in the city of Cusco.
However, Paredes said that authorities were considering Canchis and Anta as alternative locations for the construction of Cusco’s new airport.
"Cusco will have a new international airport because the existing one is reaching saturation due to strong demand from tourists. Bidding process will resume this year after determining the location," he added.
The new terminal in Chinchero, 29km outside of the Cusco city centre, is expected to handle around 2.6 million passengers annually by 2021.
