Lima, May 05 (ANDINA). More than 2,000 people in Peru's southern Ica region visited the 'Peru, Mucho Gusto' food festival on its first day, according to a tourism official.

The three day culinary festival, which kicked off Friday at Ica's Campo Ferial fairground, is offering some 100 dishes from nine Peruvian regions, including Ica, Moquegua, Tacna, Puno, Madre de Dios, Ayacucho, Cusco, Apurimac and Arequipa.

Marisol Acosta, deputy director for domestic tourism at Peru's export and tourism promotion board Promperu, said the number of visitors will certainly increase over the weekend.

"We have seen how people enjoyed the signature dishes of these nine regions," she told Andina. "Most visitors were families and gastronomy students who took the opportunity to learn more about Peruvian cuisine."

The event, which expects to attract 25,000 visitors, also features music shows, parades and cooking classes by renowned chefs. 'Peru, Mucho Gusto' is the slogan with which the country has been promoting its cuisine since 2006.
